Gather and Bake: Creating Sweet Springtime Memories at Home

There’s something about spring that feels made for gathering — gathering flowers, gathering flavours, gathering loved ones close for simple, joy-filled moments.

When I think of springtime baking, it always brings me back to the sweetest memories from my childhood.

I remember staying at my Gran’s house in Surrey, the sun warm in the garden and the scent of blossoms floating through the air.

After lunch, it was tradition: we would slip on our wellies, grab a little basket, and head out the back to Gran’s beloved allotment.

There, tucked between the rows of neat vegetables, was her strawberry patch — bursting with ripe, red jewels just waiting to be picked.

We’d search for the biggest, juiciest strawberries we could find, carefully plucking them from the plants, laughter filling the air.

Later, we would wash them, pop them into bowls, sprinkle them with sugar from Gran’s elegant silver sugar shaker, and pour lashings of thick, velvety cream over the top.

Those strawberries tasted like pure sunshine. No complicated recipes, no fancy plating — just the magic of freshness, simplicity, and love shared around the table.

Today, those moments inspire how I think about baking with my own family — and how I hope to inspire you too.

Here are a few ways you can gather sweet memories this spring:

  • Host a simple springtime picnic of sandwiches made with crusty bread, cheese straws and lots of fresh berries.
  • Have breakfast in the garden or even your morning coffee and take a moment to close your eyes and listen to the birds
  • Plant a few herbs or edible flowers in pots on your windowsill — then bake with them!

At Morton Baking Academy, we believe the best recipes aren’t just about ingredients — they’re about the memories you create while making them.

I’d love to hear…

Do you have a special springtime memory connected to food, family, or baking? Come share it with us in the comments or over on Instagram — I’d love to gather around your stories too.

Until next time,
